Current draw is estimated per heater only. It does not determine whether an outlet or circuit is suitable.

Guide

How much does a space heater cost to run?

A space heater’s running cost comes down to power, active heating time, and your variable electricity rate. The label gives the maximum draw; the thermostat determines how often that maximum is actually used.

Start with watts and active heating time

Most portable electric heaters list watts on a label near the cord, on the back, or in the manual. Use the wattage for the setting you actually select: a heater may show 750 watts on low and 1,500 watts on high.

A 1,500-watt heater consumes 1.5 kilowatt-hours for every full hour its heating element runs. At the April 2026 U.S. residential average of 18.83 cents per kWh, that is about $0.28 per active hour. Four full-power hours a day for 30 days cost about $33.89; at 50% heating time, the modeled cost is $16.95.

Space-heater cost formulakWh = watts × hours × days × heaters × on-time ÷ 1,000

Multiply the resulting kWh by the electricity price per kWh to estimate the added usage charge.

Use the variable rate from your electricity bill

Many bills separate supply or generation from delivery or distribution. Add together the charges priced per kWh. Leave out a fixed customer charge because you pay it whether or not the heater runs. Time-of-use customers should calculate peak and off-peak schedules separately.

Does low use less electricity?

A 750-watt setting costs half as much as 1,500 watts for the same active runtime. It may not cut the final bill in half if it runs longer to maintain the same temperature.

How does thermostat cycling help?

Cycling reduces the time the heating element draws full power. Use 100% as the maximum and a lower scenario only when the thermostat genuinely switches the element off.

Do heater types cost differently?

Ceramic, infrared, fan-forced, and oil-filled resistance heaters have essentially the same full-power cost at equal wattage. They differ in heat distribution, comfort, and cycling.

Is a space heater cheaper than central heat?

It can save money when you heat one occupied room and reduce whole-home heating. The U.S. Department of Energy describes this limited zone-heating use case. Running several heaters without lowering central heat usually does not create the same benefit.

What about a heat pump?

Heat pumps move heat instead of producing it entirely through electric resistance. The Department of Energy’s heat-pump guidance explains why modern systems can use substantially less electricity for the same heating job.

How can I improve the estimate?

Record how many minutes the heating indicator stays on during a representative hour, or use a properly rated plug-in electricity monitor. Recheck on colder days because cycling will change.

FAQ

Space heater electricity cost questions

Practical answers about wattage, thermostat cycling, heater types, utility rates, and safe use.

How much does a space heater cost to run per hour?

A 1,500-watt heater uses 1.5 kWh for every full hour its heating element runs. At 18.83 cents per kWh, that is about $0.28 per active heating hour. A thermostat that cycles the element off can lower the average cost per scheduled hour.

How much does a 1,500-watt space heater cost per month?

At 18.83 cents per kWh, a 1,500-watt heater running at full power for 4 hours a day and 30 days costs about $33.89 per month. If the element heats only half the scheduled time, the estimate falls to about $16.95.

How much electricity does a 1,500-watt heater use?

A 1,500-watt heater uses 1.5 kWh for each hour the heating element is active. Four full-power hours use 6 kWh, while four scheduled hours at a 50% thermostat duty cycle use about 3 kWh.

Does the low setting on a space heater use less electricity?

Yes, while the element is running. A 750-watt low setting uses half the power of a 1,500-watt high setting. However, low may need to run longer to reach or maintain the same room temperature, so the final savings may be less than 50%.

How does thermostat cycling change space-heater cost?

Thermostat cycling reduces active heating time. A 50% on-time means the element heats for roughly half of the scheduled period, cutting modeled electricity use in half compared with continuous full-power operation. Actual cycling varies with the room, weather, setpoint, and heater.

Are oil-filled, ceramic, and infrared heaters cheaper to run?

At the same wattage and active runtime, electric resistance heaters cost essentially the same to operate. Heater type changes how warmth is delivered and may affect comfort or thermostat cycling, but it does not make 1,500 watts consume fewer than 1.5 kWh per active hour.

Do two space heaters double the electricity cost?

If both heaters have the same wattage and follow the same schedule, two heaters use twice the electricity and cost twice as much as one. Do not assume multiple heaters can safely share an outlet or circuit; follow each manufacturer’s instructions.

Which electricity rate should I use from my bill?

Use the variable price charged for each kWh. If your bill lists supply or generation and delivery or distribution as separate per-kWh charges, add them together. Do not assign fixed customer charges to the heater because those do not change with its usage.

Is a space heater cheaper than central heating?

It can be cheaper when it heats one occupied room and lets you reduce whole-home heating. It is not automatically cheaper if the central system keeps running normally or if several rooms need separate heaters. Fuel price, system efficiency, heat-pump performance, and home heat loss all affect the comparison.

Is it safe to leave a space heater on overnight?

The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission advises never leaving a portable heater running while sleeping. Plug it directly into a wall outlet, keep it at least three feet from combustible materials, and follow the manufacturer’s placement and operating instructions.
